Our Story

Since 1982

Hang Loose was born in 1982, in Brazil — at a time when surfwear did not yet exist in the country.

Founded by surfer Alfio Lagnado, the brand emerged from a simple need: to create functional surf shorts that would support his journeys in search of the perfect wave. With no technical surfwear available, Alfio began producing his own.

What started as a personal solution quickly became a cultural statement — a brand shaped by the ocean, driven by freedom, and rooted in authenticity.

1986 Pro Contest — A Defining Chapter

In 1986, Florianópolis became the stage for a historic moment:
the first CT event ever held in Brazil.

With powerful 8–10 foot waves breaking along the legendary lefthand point, thousands of spectators gathered to witness the world’s best surfers compete at the highest level.

At that time, Brazilian surfing had yet to gain international recognition.
This event marked a turning point — not only for competitive surfing in Brazil, but for an entire generation that finally saw itself reflected on the world stage.

Hang Loose was there.
At the dawn of a movement.

Since then, the brand has carried this spirit forward — blending performance, lifestyle and heritage into every collection.
